JERRY WILLIAMS III- HENRY CLAY HIGH SCHOOL

Tell everyone about yourself?
Hey What's up SoSportz my name is Jerry Williams III. I am a Junior at Henry Clay High School in Lexington, KY. I am the starting Quarterback for Varsity. When I played QB for my Freshman and JV team we went undefeated. I've been playing Varsity football since my freshman year as a second string Quarterback and also played Conerback, Free Safety, and Receiver at the Varsity Level. I'm a Hardworking , Dedicated young man and I know there's always room for improvement. A motto I use for myself is(given to me by my mother) "As I go through life I try to IMPROVE myself not PROVE myself". Also I give a 110 percent in practice and even more in games. Football is my passion and I'll give my all for my team to get that Win. As far as Colleges go, University of Kentucky and University of Louisville has shown the most serious interest however Michigan St., West Virginia, Virginia, Texas A&M, and PITT have shown interest also. I am looking forward to this (2010) Football Season.

What was your best game?
My Best game was in (2009) First Round of the Play-offs against the Lafayette Generals. I Threw for 296 yards and 6 Touchdowns and rushed for 45 yards. We ended up winning the game 47 to 10.

What are your strengths as a quarterback?
My strengths as a Quarterback would be my running ability and being able to throw an accurate ball while scrambling. My knowledge of the game and my ability to be a leader are also strong qualities.

Why are sports/education important to you?
Sports and Education are important to me because with sports I've been playing since age 5 starting with flag football. Ever since it's been football, football, football burned into my heart and I love it. I love the intensity walking out on that field for pre-game warming up, talking to your teammates about how we have each others back, and we're going to get this win. As for myself, wanting to be an Engineer, education is also just as important. Without an education you're nothing. Dedication on and off the field is very important. You have to have something to fall back on. You never know when an injury may occur in your football career.

What is your dream college?
My dream college would be West Virginia. I've always watched Pat White and watched his techniques in one on one situations. Also the Mountaineers atmosphere is great. There are die hard fans there that love Mountaineer Football and I would love to play for that University.

If a College Coach ask you, how can you make our team better, what would you say?
I'm bringing leadership skills, the desire to win, and the skills necessary to achieve that goal. I have knowledge of the game and I've played many position. I'm a very coachable guy and I'm able to take criticism and use it to better myself.

What advice can you give other student-athletes?
After practice go throw routes with your receivers and get that timing perfect! Go watch film and study your opponent. Break them down and study their weakness. Ask your coach what his game plan is for this week, study it, see what you like and don't like, and just give your opinion on it! A wise Quarterback(Shane Boyd) once told me " Don't take a day for granted and work hard EVERYDAY even if it's just an Extra 10-20mins because you're not just competing against people in your state or city but you're competing against everyone in the nation at your position."

That would have to be my game vs White Station(6-A TN state champions). This game I just found myself in a zone making play after play not thinking, just enjoying the game. It was not until after the game when I saw the flim and talking to my brother that I had found out that I had 21 tackles and 5 sacks. It was just a great defensive game for our team.

What can you do to make yourself better in your sport?
I live with one goal and that is be better than I was yesterday. I take this with me on and off the field. I understand that hard work and determination paysoff so I study and train hard everyday to take my game to the next level and become a better person.

What is your dream college?

If a College Coach ask you, how can you make our team better, what would you say?
I'm a student of the game. I work hard and look at film alot to see what I can do better. I have played MLB, OLB, SS,FS, WR, and TE. I can play anywhere my team needs me to play. I bring good work ethic, speed, and knowledge of the game and cant wait to learn more. I have been told that I'm like a coach on the field.

What advice can you give other student-athletes?
Use your gift and don't let it use you and understand that we are student-athletes and not athlete-students. Go just as hard in the classroom as you do in your sport.

KYLE BOLIN- LEXINGTON CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

Tell everyone about yourself?
My name is Kyle Bolin and I'm a freshman at Lexington Catholic High School in Lexington, Kentucky. I play football there where currently I'm the Quarterback. This past season(2009), I played wide receiver on the varsity level because I was third on the depth chart behind two senior Quarterbacks. However, I started Quarterback on the freshman and JV level. This coming up season,(2010), I will begin my career as a varsity quarterback. I will have my sophomore, junior, and senior year to live up to the hype that has been set upon my shoulders. I have been very lucky to perform at my very best in front of very important people. In the off-season after my eighth grade season, I was named the FBU East All-American Team starting Quarterback. A couple months later, I participated in the National Underclassmen Combine. As an eighth grader, I had to compete with current freshman at the time. There were three combines, an open combine for anyone to do, an ultimate 100 for the elite players in the surrounding states, and then a top prospect camp for the top 100 players in the nation. As an eighth grader competing with freshman, I was named the QB MVP in all three events. After my showcase, I have been contacted by many schools such as Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, South Carolina, Florida, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Kentucky, Georgia, Texas, Florida State, Missouri, UCLA, Michigan, Louisville, West Virginia, Duke, Northwestern, Illinois, and Arizona State. The Goal for myself this season is to win a state championship and be honored as the first team all-state team.

What was your best game?
My best game was when we played Trinity High School. They are a powerhouse 6A school in Louisville, KY. Before the game started the coach told me to get our offense to 35points. After the game, I ended with 5 passing touchdowns and 2 rushing touchdowns. I threw for 350 yards and ran for 175 yards. We lost the game but it was one of the best games of my career.

Why are sports/education important to you?
Education comes first. In order to survive in this country, you must have an education and a degree. Sports may not always be there so I will need something to fall back on, and an education is my insurance. Sports is very important to me because it keeps me in good physical condition and allows me to stay in shape. Also, sports teaches you how to handle yourself around people and ables you to become a man, and learn very important habits for when you mature.

What can you do to make yourself better quarterback?
Practice. Practice. Practice. Throwing, running, lifting, and studying film. There is so much to being a good Quarterback. I look at it as if I could always be better, no matter how good I am. I can always throw more balls, work on my agility, my release, my hand offs, and decisions. One thing I need to work on the most is being patient in the pocket and going through my read progression.

What is your dream college?
The University of Tennessee. Ever since I was six, I have always dreamed about quarterbacking the Volunteers of Tennessee in an SEC environment. I went to one of their games and it was mind-blowing. The stadium is so loud and the fans are crazy. From then on I've tried to imagine what it would be like to play in front of a fan base like Tennessee's. Hopefully I will be able to experience that feeling one day.

If a College Coach ask you, how can you make our team better, what would you say?
I would say many things. The most important thing would be to have a shorter memory. The ability to forget the mistakes I've made the moment after I've made them. Sometimes when mistakes are made, I would get down on myself or my team. Another thing I need to work on is not keying on one player. Sometimes I choose who I'm throwing to based on how well the wide receiver is. I need to go through my progressions and throw to the open receiver, not the player.

What advice can you give other student-athletes?
The decisions you make today will effect the rest of your life. Many kids make stupid decisions when they are young and it ruins the athletes future. Also, to live like a peasant today, then like a king tomorrow. In other words, work your butt off while a kid, make sacrifices that you normally wouldn't make just to make sure nothing goes wrong. After all the hard work, you will live a very easy and happy life when your older based on all the hard work you've put in as a kid. Just remember though that sports is only temporary and you will always need an education to fall back on. Education comes before athletics.

MIKE SMITH- SAYRE HIGH SCHOOL

Tell everyone about yourself?
Whats good SoSportz. I'm Mike Smith. I am a freshman attending Sayre High School in the class of 2013. I am an athletic guard that tries to distribute to my teammates and score for my team. I live in Lexington, Kentucky and have been here my whole life. I put basketball over everything in life, I chose basketball over anything in life including hanging out with friends and any sort of social life. I am all about being humble and working hard to get to where I want to go. My goal is to go division 1 and then go Pro from there. I play AAU every year but I'm not decided where I'm going to play this year. My other biggest focus right now is getting my grades to Division 1 standards. School is something all athletes need to take serious and I'm learning that more and more every day

What was your best game?
My best game was a 30 point game against Nicholas County. It wasn't just the points that made the game good though, I made my teammates better that game too. I had many assist and made my teammates wide open. All around, that game I did what the ideal point guard is supposed to do.

Why are sports/education important to you?
Education is important because it is the root to everything in life. If you have a good education the sky is the limit for your life. I try to make the best grades I can make and work hard on all my work to achieve those grades. I'm going to be honest, I'm not the smartest kid on the block, but the hard work I put in, getting work done, and making the best grades I can always makes up for it. It shows the teachers I'm willing to work and do good in their class. Sports is something I've always put over anything. I was born and raised through all sports. At an early age I chose basketball to be the sport I take seriously. My goal in basketball has always been to make it to the top. I've played with older groups of players since 6th grade, sitting bench varsity in 7th grade then starting in 8th. This year I was the number one scorer in the city of Lexington and number 12 in the state.

What is your dream college?
My dream colleges are University of North Caroline, because my favorite players Ty Lawson and Vince Carter graduated from there. Also Kentucky because that's my hometown and I admire all the work John Calipari puts into making the program better and developing NBA players.

If a College Coach ask you, how can you make our team better, what would you say?
I am a guard who doesn't always just look for scoring. Though I can score alot, I really enjoy getting my teammates open and making everyone around me better. I like making assist and tricky passes that fakes the defenders out and makes my teammate have an easy shot. Also I'm a natural born leader and I like keeping my teammates heads up when there down. Even in times when we're losing and it looks like there's no hope, I encourage my team to fight until the end and to never go down without a fight.

What advice can you give other student-athletes?
All athletes need to focus on being an ideal student if they want to go anywhere with there athletics. No matter how good you are at whatever sport you play, all colleges are going to want to see is what kind of student you are before they consider taking you. Being a student and making good grades isn't just for sports, in life your going to want a back up plan if sports doesn't work out and it will all revolve around your education. You never know where you're going to end up in life but you always want to have a good education to fall back on.
